Asi Taulava joins NLEX coaching staff

And there is a better reason why Asi Taulava should end his career with the MNTC-owned franchise.

After being rumored that he wants to be traded to another team, the oldest player in the PBA has now started embarking on a coaching career by joining the Road Warriors’ coaching staff.

NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao told pba.ph that the 44-year-old center has begun taking an active role in the coaching staff this season, but only made the grizzled veteran’s involvement publicly known just recently to squelch speculations that he is one among the players being put on the trading block.

“I don’t think there’s a plan to trade Asi because he is now a member of the coaching staff, which means even if he ends his playing career, he would still have active participation in the squad,” Guiao said.

Para kay Guiao, malaki pa rin ang magiging contribution ni Taulava sa kanyang koponan kung saan kailangan ng mga batang frontliners nito ang presensya ng isang beteranong katulad niya.

Early this season, Taulava expressed his desire to play for another team, but changed his mind and opted to stay on and play the remainder of his career with the Road Warriors.

Guiao said changes will happen in the team to address its struggles and the Road Warriors already took the initial step by acquiring Rabeh Al-Hussaini.

The 6-foot-7 Al-Hussaini, a journeyman center, is reunited with the coach who drafted him as the second overall pick in 2010 for Air 21 Express.

Guiao said Taulava will still play an integral part in the team along with other veterans like Enrico Villanueva and Sean Anthony together with young big men Eric Camson, Glenn Khobuntin, Raul Soyud, Bradwyn Guinto and import Wayne Chism.
