Billy Robles tallied 18 points and had 13 rebounds in a stellar performance and Marinerong Pilipino outsteadied Go for Gold, 86-80, on Monday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Pasig Sports Center.
Go for Gold kept the game close, pulling within 80-84 on Jerwin Gaco's basket with 1:23 left.
The rugged guard also dished five assists, had two steals and two blocks to help the Skippers improved to 5-2 record and tied idle Akari-Adamson Falcons at second spot.
Marinerong Pilino also got 16 points from Renzo Subido, 13 from Alvin Pasaol and 12 points and eight rebounds from Gab Banal.
"We could not get our rhythm in the first half, but I'm happy na nag-step up kami sa defense," said Skippers' coach Koy Banal.
Marinerong Pilipino started the fourth quarter with a 13-4 run that turned a 62-66 deficit into a 75-70 lead with 5:06 remaining.
But Robles hit a free throw then blocked Yankie Haruna in the ensuing play to seal the win for the Skippers.
Gaco paced scored 16 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Salem chipped in 14 and five rebounds for Go for Gold, which dropped to eighth place with a 4-4 record.
