Marinerong Pilipino determined to clinch first title

MARINERONG Pilipino looks to clinch the 2019 PBA D-League Foundation Cup title in Game Two of its best-of-three Finals tiff versus BRT Sumisip Basilan-St. Clare Wednesday at Cuneta Astrodome.

The Skippers surely do not want to pass up on the golden opportunity to win their first crown in the developmental ranks as momentum is on their side following their 69-59 Game One win last week.

And they could be in the league's record books as well should they win, as they will become only the third team to go perfect in a conference after NLEX did it in the 2012 and 2014 Foundation Cups.

Marinerong Pilipino is unbeaten so far in 10 games.

But before achieving those grand plans, coach Yong Garcia just wants to see a more solid outing in Game Two after Game One saw the Skippers nearly lose hold of a big 19-point lead in the series opener.

"Yun yung nagiging problema namin before and lumabas na naman. Hopefully ma-correct namin para sa Game Two hindi kami parang roller-coaster ulit," said Garcia.

Conference MVP favorite Eloy Poligrates will lead the fight together with Jhonard Clarito and Mark Yee for Marinerong Pilipino in the 1 p.m. clash.

Standing on its way, though, is a BRT Sumisip-St. Clare side that aims to push the series to the limit.

The Saints gave the Skippers a game challenge in Game One with their furious comeback try, and coach Stevenson Tiu believes they have a chance should they play well defensively for all 40 minutes.

"If we play that kind of game defensively the whole game, may chance kami manalo," said Tiu. "Let's see, hopefully maka-isa sa Game Two."

Expected to lead BRT Sumisip-St. Clare's retaliation are Mohammad Pare, Joshua Fontanilla, and Junjie Hallare.
