After heartbreaking finals loss, Roger Pogoy shifts focus on Gilas Pilipinas campaign in World Cup

THE heartbreaking loss in the PBA Commissioner's Cup finals is now a thing of the past. Roger Pogoy now has his sights on Gilas Pilipinas' campaign in the FIBA World Cup.

Finally recharged, the TnT Katropa guard said he has nothing on his mind now than to help the national team in whatever way he can in its bid in the August 31 to Sept. 15 meet in China.

"Nakapahinga naman," said Pogoy, who was grateful that his family visited him here from Cebu to somehow help him eased the pain of losing the recent best-of-seven title series against San Miguel Beer.

He added it's not physical but more on the mental side that he had a hard time adjusting.

"Nakakapagod kasi mentally, hindi naman physically. Mentally talaga yung nakakapagod, ang dami mo kasing iniisip," he said.

As the top seeded team with no less than prolific import Terrence Jones at the helm, the Katropa were favored to finally end a two-year title drought even though they're up against a talented team in San Miguel.

Unfortunately, the team let two supposed won games slipped out of their hands, enabling the Beermen to pick up momentum and finish the Katropa inside six games.

Though it was such a sorry loss, life has to go on for Pogoy.

"Ngayon hindi ko na iniisip yung finals. Tapos na yun, wala na yun," he said. "Ngayon focus na lang ako kung ano maitutulong ko sa Gilas."

The 27-year-old Cebuano attended the Gilas practice for the second straight day at the Meralco gym, where he trained for 30 extra minutes with fellow latecomers June Mar Fajardo and Troy Rosario to help them refresh the sets and patterns of the national team.

Marc Barroca and Beau Belga assisted the three under the watchful eyes of coach Yeng Guiao.

"Para makuha lang namin ng full yung (dagdag na) set plays. Before practice dapat mag-extra work kami. Kaya naman," he said. (RG)
