Beermen gauge PH Cup chances san Fajardo in mini-pocket meet

FOUR teams led by defending champion San Miguel Beer warm up for the coming PBA Philippine Cup as it plays in a week-long, mini-tournament at the Upper Deck gym.

Joining the Beermen in the Feb. 17-21 meet are the NLEX Road Warriors, Alaska Aces, and the Phoenix Fuel Masters, who initiated the pre-season event.

The first day on Feb 17 will see the Fuel Masters taking on the Aces in the first game followed by the tussle between the Road Warriors and the five-time all-Filipino champion Beermen.

On the 19th, the Beermen clash with the Fuel Masters in a rematch between the two teams that battled in the semifinals of the Philippine Cup last year. In the second game, it's NLEX going up against Alaska.

Finally, the Road Warriors cross path with the Fuel Masters and the Beermen tackle the Aces in the final day of the tournament on the 21st.

The pocket meet will see San Miguel playing for the first time minus main man June Mar Fajardo, who just underwent operation for a fractured right leg tibia that will have him skipping the season-opening tournament, and likely beyond that.

Matches will be game-like scenarios, with the team which emerged unbeaten - or at least with the best record - emerging as champion.

The tournament also comes in handy especially after the PBA decided to defer the opening of its 45th season at least for another week on March 8 as preventive measure for the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.(RG)
