Beermen seek to firm up spot in Top 8 vs Dyip

SCRAMBLING for W's, San Miguel Beer is determined to nail this one to solidify spot in the Top Eight.

On the other end of the court will be the Terrafirma team fresh from snapping a long losing streak dating back to last season.

The Beermen and the Dyip duke it out at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday in the PBA Commissioner's Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig, with the former out to break out of a tie for seventh place and the latter seeking another win in the hope of closing out their stint in the tourney on a winning note.

Terrafirma, largely behind Lester Prosper's 50-point job, blasted NLEX, 124-114, to end a 10-game slump in the conference, a 21-game funk in the season and 25-game slide dating from its 109-103 disposal of Blackwater way back Feb. 12 in the Governors' Cup elims.

"I told Lester before this game 'you gotta get 50 points' and he did that. I'm also thankful to the players - Juami (Tiongson), Gelo (Alolino) and Alex (Cabagnot). After 25 games, at least nasira namin ang sumpa. We can start again and we hope to carry this to our last two games," said coach Johnedel Cardel.

They now want to exit on some amount of glory, hoping to win their last two games against San Miguel Beer and Phoenix Super LPG.

Late as it is, but the Dyip import feels things have come together for the team.

"We've had a good practice for the past week and I felt that everyone's coming together, getting chemistry. It's good we're doing this now. I'm glad we stopped that funk, that losing streak and I'm happy I contributed," said Prosper, who also posted 19 rebounds and five assists against NLEX.

But the Beermen will surely be on their toes, also with a great desire and determination to win all their remaining games.

They're barely in the Top 8, actually sharing seventh and eighth spots with the Meralco Bolts at 4-5.

They need to sweep their last three games against Terrafirma, TNT and Meralco to make it safely to the post-elims play.

And a sweep of those games may even send to the best-of-three quarterfinals. (SB)
