Blackwater owner puts premium on children's education

THEY say education is the best inheritance a parent can give his child.

No wonder Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy admitted being carried away by emotions when he attended the graduation of his son Donway and saw him earn a degree.

The President and CEO of Ever Bilena Cosmetics Inc., described the experience as a 'fun moment,' admitting that he never graduated himself as Sy had to juggle his time as a working student back then at the Philippine School of Business Administration.

"I took time off to fly to UBC (University of British Columbia) to witness his graduation," recalled Sy in a video interview with Donway for the Manila Bulletin Lifestyle section in celebration of Father's Day.

"I love it. I'm just happy to see him graduate," added the Blackwater executive who became a bit emotional during the video shoot.

Sy is proud of how Donway had to sacrifice being away from the family by studying overseas and fulfill the dream of his father to earn a degree.

"I see him studying hard at night and I have to adjust to his schedule because he's studying and need to go to school, so I have to adjust to him," said the elder Sy.

But the feeling is mutual as Donway always looks up to his father, who worked hard for the family and made sure there is food on the table even though he didn't get to complete his studies in college.

The younger Sy describes his 63-year-old father as 'very humble and very down to earth.'

He added he'll always be grateful to his dad for always being there for him.
