Bolts tangle with Broncos in BCL Asia quarterfinals

MERALCO drew Ulaanbaatar Xac Broncos for its quarterfinals opponent in the Basketball Champions League Asia.

The drawing of lots was held Monday during a break in the week-long tournament in Dubai by the end of the group phase.

The Bolts and Broncos tangle on Wednesday in the second game of a quadruple header at the Coca-Cola Arena.

Tabiat and reigning B. League champion Utsunomiya Brex kick off the knockout phase, followed by the Meralco-Ulaanbaatar match, the showdown between home team Shabab Al Ahli and Taoyuan Pauian Pilots, and defending champion Al Riyadi against Zhejiang Lions.

The quarterfinalists were determined according to the cumulative rankings between the three groups after the group phase.

Korean Basketball League champion Changwon LG Sakers was the only team that failed to advance in the next round.

Meralco evened its two games in Group B during the group phase, initially losing against Shabab Al Ahli, 101-87, and then bouncing back against Utsunomiya Brex, 97-86.

Ulaanbaatar also ended up with a 1-1 (win-loss) record in Group A, winning over the Zhejiang Lions, 84-67, but lost a close game against Tabiat, 78-76.

Winner of the Bolts-Broncos matchup will meet the survivor of the Tabiat-Utsunomiya game.

The semifinals is set on June 12, and the championship game will be played the following day (June 13).
