Canaleta rediscovers his touch when it matters most

Veteran forward KG Canaleta received praises from his teammates after a 30-point performance and played a crucial role in Meralco's 103-100 overtime victory over Phoenix Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Canaleta needed 28 shots to register his best scoring output since joining Meralco before the start of the season, eliciting a joke from import Arinze Onuaku.

"Sobrang dami daw ng shots ko. Michael Jordan daw," related Canaleta, who made 12 of those attempts. "Kung di ko daw pini-fake yung mga pinapasa niya, siguro mga 35 shots daw ako. Pero joke lang daw yun."

Meralco had every reason to be in a laughing mood after weathering a tough stand by Phoenix as it improved its PBA Commissioner's Cup record to 5-2 and moved closer towards a quarterfinals berth.

The 13-year pro was still talking to reporters at the hallway of the Big Dome when Bolts coach Norman Black walked by to congratulate Canaleta's big night.

"Good job, KG," said Black, before exiting the coliseum with his coaching staff.

It didn't take while for Canaleta to poke fun at himself after getting a pat on the back from his coach.

"Ayun, sabi niya good job. 28 shots, good job," Canaleta said while laughing.(JT)
