Gilas men's 3x3 kicks off title retention drive in 31st SEA Games

GILAS Pilipinas men's 3x3, represented by PBA 3x3 First Conference champion Limitless App, kicks off its title-retention bid in the 31st Southeast Asian Games Friday at the Thanh Tri Gymnasium in Vietnam.

Appmasters Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Jorey Napoles, Marvin Hayes and Reymar Caduyac hit the half-court three times in the opening action of the two-day hostilities, bent on making a rousing debut.

The Nationals take on Cambodia first at 12 noon (Manila time) before facing Thailand at 3 p.m. and 2019 silver medalist Indonesia at 4:20 p.m.

Rosser and Co. return to action Saturday for the conclusion of the preliminaries with matches against Singapore (11:40 a.m.), Malaysia (1:20 p.m.) and host and Manila SEAG bronze medalist Vietnam (3 p.m.) on the plate.

The Willie Wilson-coached Pinoy 3x3 crew is looking to duplicate the feat of the group of PBA mainstays Mo Tautuaa, CJ Perez, Chris Newsome and Jason Perkins, who swept their way to the inaugural 3x3 gold on home ground.

Their women's counterparts, 2019 winners Afril Bernardino, Clare Castro and Janine Pontejos seek a similar objective with new teammate Angel Surada taking the place of the injured Jack Animam.

Gilas women's 3x3 meets Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand Thursday then wraps up its elims slate against Singapore and Malaysia on Friday.

The Gilas 3x3 contingent plunges into action just as the PBA-backed Gilas men's 5-on-5 quintet leaves for Vietnam along with the cagebelles.

Overall objective is to repeat a clean sweep of the four basketball gold medals at stake in the pandemic-delayed SEAG. (OL)
