Herndon, Manuel lift Alaska past SMB

ALASKA survived a fiery fourth quarter charge by San Miguel to come away with an 81-79 victory Friday in the Phoenix Super Basketball Tournament at Upper Deck Gym in Pasig.

The Aces squandered a 62-48 advantage that was trimmed to 79-78 before Vic Manuel scored a tough bucket to make it a three-point lead with 17.1 seconds left.

Alex Cabagnot made one of two free throws and the Beermen had chance to tie or win the game when Manuel turned the ball over with 9.0 ticks remaining.

In the ensuing play, SMB went to Cabagnot whose potential game-winning three missed its mark and the Beermen finished the tournament without a win.

"I was telling the team that I wish all our practice games are like these cause this is where you learn the most and it forces you to be more clear and be able to execute lalo na defensively," said coach Jeffrey Cariaso.
