PBA Homecourt: Joe Devance feels good reaching out to fans, different families

THE protective boot notwithstanding, injured Joe Devance still found time to join the PBA Homecourt which visited the San Jose covered court in Barangay Hulo, Mandaluyong.

Devance, who is out for a month for Barangay Ginebra due to a fracture on his right foot, didn't mind mingling and playing with the crowd despite walking with an obvious limp.

The injury according to him is nothing compare to other worst experience people go through their lives.

"This thing is minor compare to what people go through in everyday lives. It's nothing," said the veteran forward.

"It's always good to reach out to see different families out there."

Devance was the second injured player to go along with the league staff led by Commissioner Willie Marcial for the weekly foray that makes surprise visit in different barangays in the metropolis.

A week ago, TnT Katropa's David Semerad was also on hand despite showing up with his elbow on a sling after undergoing operation to remove bone spurs.

Unlike Semerad, Devance had company this time in good friend Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine and San Miguel assistant coach Ato Agustin.

Also with the group are the PLDT-Smart Foundation Inc. staff led by its president Esther Santos and Smart Sports Senior Product Specialist Yvette Ruiz.

Devance said it was quite an experience being with common basketball fans even for just a few minutes.

"It was fun to always go to something like that and reach out to the kids and families that don't really have the means to go to the games as often as other people do," he said.

"So it was good for us to go out there and reach out to them."

Too bad, the other barangay the league was supposed to visit too, no longer pushed through owing to the heavy afternoon rain that made the open court unavailable.(RG)
