PBA modifies playing rules

The PBA Commissioner's Office has announced on Wednesday that it has made revisions in the league's playing rules in its effort to speed up games and to prevent possible on-court confrontations aligned with FIBA rules.

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said the revisions will take effect during the league's 45th Season.

Marcial, together with deputy commissioner Eric Castro and technical head Bong Pascual, said all modifications were presented to the four-man Competition Committee who unanimously agreed to the proposed changes.

This year's Competition Committee is composed of San Miguel's Leo Austria, Rain or Shine's Caloy Garcia, Blackwater's Nash Racela and Phoenix's Louie Alas who was represented in the meeting by assistants Carmelo Alas and Kris Reyes.

Marcial said he intends to rotate the members of the Committee every year.

According to Castro, the revisions covered the rules on: 1) Snatching of the ball; 2. Substitution during a 30-second timeout; 3. Resetting/start of shotclock, and; 4. Fines and penalties for flagrant and technical fouls.

"Definitely the revisions will speed up the game, thus making it more exciting," said Castro, adding modifications on fines and penalties on flagrant and technical fouls should deter on-court confrontations and unsportsmanlike conduct."

Castro added that he, the commissioner, together with the PBA technical committee composed of Bong Pascual, Joey Guanio and Junior Bengua, will do the rounds in all team practices to discuss and further explain the changes to the players and team officials.

"We will visit all team practices to ensure that players and team officials get the new rules right," Castro said.
