Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda smothers Keanzel Basketball

MARINERONG Pilipino-San Beda battered neophyte Keanzel Basketball, 109-59, and claimed its second straight win in the 2024 PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup Monday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.

It was the second blowout victory for the Red Lions, who smothered Go Torakku-St. Clare, 92-59, to start their campaign Thursday last week.

James Payosing played just 13 minutes and finished with a game-high 18 points, including 11 in the first quarter to set the tone of Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda's breakaway.

Richi Calimag scored 14 points that went with his five rebounds and four assists while fellow second styringers Bryan Sajonia and Joe Celzo had 12 apiece. The Red Lions drew 74 points from their bench.

"Like our last game, hindi pa namin kilala 'yung kalaban namin so we had to do better than we did in our last game. Kailangan i-respeto 'yung kalaban at syempre, nasa D-League sila so hindi pwede i-take for granted," said coach Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda coach Yuri Escueta.

The Red Lions was all business from the get go. They held Keanzel Basketball to 5 of 16 shooting in the first quarter to take a 28-16 advantage after one quarter. Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda led 62-39 at halftime.

James Martinez scored 14 points while Rudolfo Alota,Dominic Panlilio and Earl Ceniza had nine apiece for Keanzel Basketball, which shot a woeful 30 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers.

In contrast, the Red Lions made 55 percent of their shots, dominated the boards, 53-33, and took a 34-11 advantage in assists. (JBU)
