3x3 key topic in coming PBA board meeting

THE PBA board of governors holds its first meeting in 2021 before the end of January, with the 3x3 launch, Draft details and Gilas concerns as among the key topics.

"If all are available, Jan. 28 is the target date. It's a day after the deadline for draft application," said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial.

The January confab would also be an opportunity where board members would be updated on preparations for the March 14 Annual Draft.

Before that or around that date, the PBA is looking forward to finally present the inaugural PBA 3x3 competition.

The inaugural three-a-side competition was supposed to blast off last year side-by-side with the Philippine Cup before the COVID-19 put things to a standstill.

But the pro league is still intent on seeing to fruition its plan for a stand-alone 3x3 tourney.

"Paguusapan namin ang sistema at kung anong tournament at kung papayagan ba ng IATF," said Marcial, who is batting for a closed-circuit concept for this event.

Bachmann heads the committee in charge for the PBA 3x3. Also in the committee are fellow governors Erick Arejola of NorthPort and Raymond Zorrilla of Phoenix, PBA technical official Joey Guanio and coach Ronnie Magsanoc, representing the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

The PBA 3x3 idea came up in the most recent PBA planning session as recommended by PBA vice chairman Bobby Rosales, with the intent to help the national cage federation boost this hoop discipline set to make its debut in the Tokyo Olympics as a regular sports event.

The PBA has had its earlier contribution in putting up the quartet of Moala Tautuaa, CJ Perez, Jason Perkins and Chris Newsome who ruled the inaugural 3x3 event in the 2019 Manila SEA Games.(SB)
