Amer slowly regaining his confidence

ONCE a promising guard when he entered the PBA, but currently at the lowest point of his career, Baser Amer is slowly but surely getting his confidence back after finding himself reunited with his old coach, Jong Uichico.

Uichico coached Amer when the latter was still playing for the gold medal winning Gilas Cadet team in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.

A multi-titled champion when he was still playing in college as well as the PBA D-League, Amer joined the PBA in 2015 and quickly showed a lot of promise while playing for Meralco.

But the former San Beda guard had a career-low averages of 4.9 points and 1.5 assists while playing for Blackwater last season.

Acquired by NLEX as a free agent, Amer patiently waited for the opportunity to rediscover his game and this season, he's been getting chances with Uichico at the coaching helm of the Road Warriors.

"Gina-grab ko lang yung opportunity na playing time na ibinibigay sa akin," Amer said. "Sina Coach Jong at yung mga teammates ko, ang laki ng tiwala nila sa akin. Si Coach Jong, ilang beses ko rin yang naging coach sa national team."

Uichico said Amer is slowly regaining his confidence and has been putting in the work in practices.

In the Road Warriors' 100-95 triumph over Phoenix on Sunday, the stocky but shifty guard hit two three-point shots in the first half.

"He knows what I need from him," Uichico said.

"And he's just playing that role. Alam naman niya kung ano yung kailangan ko sa kanya. Since he knows it, he has the confidence performing his role. But I'm not asking too much. That's why we got him from Blackwater when he became free agent and we want him to play a specific role for us." (RJ)
