Beermen seek clincher as Batang Pier try to end slide

THE San Miguel Beermen are taking it one game at a time.

And seven games into the tourney, coach Jorge Gallent and his troops now gun for the quarters clincher opposite a side aching to pump back life on a sagging bid.

San Miguel and NorthPort collide at 6:15 p.m. at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig with the Beermen seeking to put a lock on a berth in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

If ever, a triumphant result for the Beermen would also mean boosting their drive for a Top 2 finish and a twice-to-beat incentive in the Last Eight.

The Beermen nailed win No. 6 just last Friday via a 112-103 lashing of the Converge FiberXers highlighted by Marcio Lassiter's five-triple explosion in the final half.

"I was a bit upset and hesitant in the first half and coach gave me a talk and said you have to shoot because it's not helping our team if you don't stretch the floor. And that's what I did," said Lassiter on his heroics aided by the separate productive efforts of CJ Perez, Don Trollano and Terrence Romeo.

One big concern for the Beermen in their Sunday tiff is their quick turnaround from their Friday outing.

Are they ready for that?

Then one could not take for granted a NorthPort team which could be due for a big night after three successive defeats.

Before that, Arvin Tolentino and his teammates were going great guns and sharing second spot with the NLEX Road Warriors.

Now, the Batang Pier are at joint sixth with the TNT Tropang Giga with their 4-4 win-loss slates, slightly ahead of Terrafirma (4-5) and Meralco (3-4).

The Batang Pier are in critical spot, needing to check their slide if they're to gain safe passage into the quarters.(SB)
