Big J honored with special commemorative stamp

BASKETBALL legend Robert Jaworski received the ultimate compliment of becoming the first PBA player ever to be honored with his own commemorative stamp.

The tribute was made Saturday during a short but momentous ceremony held at the main building of the Post Office in Intramuros, Manila, with son Robert Jaworski Jr. representing his father together with his two children.

The release of the special Jaworski stamp is in commemoration of the first issued stamp in the country 75 years ago in 1946. Ironically, the architect behind Barangay Ginebra's immortal 'never-say-die' spirit, also turned 75 last March 8.

"I do not have enough words to truly express my gratitude. You have made me feel a different sense of pride and accomplishment incomparable to any other," said the well-respected playing-coach and former Senator in his short message read by son Dudut.

"Never ever did I imagine that I would be put in a stamp of our beloved Republic."

The unveiling of course, wouldn't be complete without members of the Barangay Ginebra team, represented by LA Tenorio, Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Mark Caguioa, Stanley Pringle, and Joe Devance.

The players were joined by Jaworski's former teammate and great rival Ramon Fernandez, now commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, and Postmaster General and CEO Norman Fulgencio.

A number of Jaworski and Barangay Ginebra fans also came over to witness the event.

Jaworski, a 13-time PBA champion and league MVP in 1978, didn't fail to mention God, wife Evelyn, his children and grandchildren for inspiring him to have an accomplished and revered basketball career.

But at the same time, the Hall of Famer and the PBA's 25 Greatest Player member, also mentioned his fans and followers for the support they've given him from then until now.

"Kayo po ang tunay na rason kung bakit nabigyan si Robert Jaworski ng parangal na ito," said Philippine basketball's Living Legend.

Jaworski being honored with a commemorative stamp is just the first in a series of tribute to be given by the Post Office to 10 Filipino legends who did well in their respective fields.(RG)
