Black mulls moving Newsome at the point guard spot

HOW about Chris Newsome playing the point for the Meralco Bolts?

His versatility, size and steady play making should certainly work to his advantage if and when coach Norman Black decides to move Newsome at the point guard spot this coming PBA 46th Season to replace Baser Amer.

Afterall, Newsome is the team's most consistent performer in the recent PBA Philippine Cup Bubble.

"I think Newsome can be a good point guard since we always get the ball in his hands, plus he's our leader in assist last conference," Black said.

Newsome was the Bolts' No. 1 scorer, averaging 14.45 points per game. He was also the Bolts' top play maker, averaging 4.36 assists per game.

According to Black, it was a tough decision to let go of Amer, who played a key role in all the Bolts' three finals runs.

Meralco dealt Amer, the team's starting point guard the since the retirement of Jimmy Alapag, and backup center/forward Bryan Faundo to Blackwater for Mac Belo in a bid to shore up its frontline.

"We've been together for five years and we've made a good run together so it's really an emotional moment for me trading him," offered Black.

"On the other hand, we want to upgrade our front court and unload extra players in the backcourt because we have a lot of point guards in the team."

Aaron Black, who was named Outstanding Rookie in the recent bubble tournament, Anjo Caram and the stocky but scrappy Nards Pinto complete Meralco's back court rotation.

Black said he is leaning towards transforming Newsome to become a combo guard, similar to Gabe Norwood's role with Rain or Shine. (RJ)
