Bolts get timely assist from rookie guard

KURT Reyson couldn't have picked a perfect time to play his first PBA game for the Meralco Bolts.

Playing behind a badly-depleted roster, the Bolts needed all the help they can get in their campaign in the Commissioner's Cup, and the addition of the rookie guard out of Letran is certainly a welcome one.

The 5-foot-10 Reyson made his debut with the franchise against Blackwater in a losing cause as Meralco went down for the first time in the conference, 114-98.

Reyson finished with seven points in seven minutes of play including a four-point shot right in his very first PBA outing.

He lamented committing four turnovers, though.

"May pressure talaga," the rookie admitted. "Hindi ko pa totally alam yung plays nila kaya medyo naguguluhan pa ako."

Prior to his first game, Reyson just practiced with Meralco for only two days after coming off a championship stint with the Pampanga Giant Lanterns in the MPBL.

"One day rest lang (after the championship) and then diretso na ako sa ensayo nila," he said. "Isang ensayo lang yun na totally practice, kasi yung last puro shooting lang yun, wala yung mga plays."

Nonetheless, Reyson coming on board was totally a welcome one for Meralco (3-1).

The Bolts have been plagued by injuries to their roster that includes Raymond Almazan, Chris Banchero, Allein Maliksi, Brandon Bates, Jolo Mendoza, rookie CJ Cansino, and import DJ Kennedy, prompting the team to play all-Filipino against the Bossing.

Guard Bong Quinto is also nursing a hurting right knee but opted to play through the pain, while original import Akil Mitchell is still recovering from a broken nose.

"Sinabihan ako nila coach Nenad (Vucinic) na ia-activate ako kasi ang dami ring injury sa team," said Reyson, a member of the Letran team that scored three straight NCAA men's basketball championships from 2019-2022.

The rookie guard hopes to be better as he gets acquainted often with his Meralco teammates.(RG)
