Bolts itching to bounceback vs FiberXers to stay in playoff race

MERALCO seeks to fan its quarterfinal drive in the PBA Philippine Cup with a bounceback victory against winless Converge Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.

The Bolts have yet to generate much electricity in the All-Filipino campaign, starting at 1-3 then notching back-to-back wins before dropping a 90-92 heartbreaker to TNT in their last appearance on April 4.

Toting a 3-4 card overall, the Bolts are sitting at ninth in the standings as of posting time, behind eight rivals with at least five wins to their slates.

Luigi Trillo's charges have four games to make their move and they better crank it up now.

The 3 p.m. tussle with the 0-8 FiberXers should be a good opportunity for Meralco to launch a strong finishing kick. The youth-laden FiberXers have yet to break through despite giving Phoenix a tough fight and mighty San Miguel an early scare in their two most recent outings.

After Converge, the Bolts take on the Fuel Masters on April 26 before dealing with two heavyweights one after the other, Magnolia and SMB.

Meralco returns to action two weeks after falling to TNT in a game where it blew a 87-84 lead in the last four minutes and fell short of stealing it on Jolo Lorenzo's missed three-pointer at the buzzer.

Trillo said the team's excellent passing plays and limited errors were good takeaways from that setback to TNT.

"We did some good things. We got 17 assists, with eight turnovers. And we battled back from 10 points down," said Trillo. "And two good, locked-in teams playing well, either one can win."

For their part, the FiberXers are bent on to bow out with a bang in their last three assignments and getting something to build on going into the next season. (OL)
