Boycie Zamar keeps an eye on son Paul

San Miguel Beer assistant coach Boycie Zamar had one piece of advice for his son Paul Zamar of Blackwater after the two met for the first time against each other Wednesday in the PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.

"Siguro masasabi ko parati sa kanya, you have to survive the PBA daily," the elder Zamar said after the Beermen's 115-106 win over Elite.

"Alam mo naman yung labanan dyan, not only sa talent. Umaasa ka sa practice mo, dapat may individual ka rin e. Kailangan mo i-prepare sarili mo emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. Yun ang dapat ang X-factors na kailangan niya paghandaan everyday. Whether it's practice, whether it's game. Sunod-sunod na yan."

The younger Zamar fulfilled his PBA dream last May when he was signed by Blackwater after a solid stint with Thai club Mono Vampire and the ASEAN Basketball League.

Paul was one of the few bright spots during Blackwater's dismal campaign in the Commissioner's Cup, averaging 10.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists in seven games.

"Nireremind naman niya ako especially yung mga pagkukulang ko as a player," related Paul, who was also given some tutelage from San Miguel guard Alex Cabagnot during his ABL stint. "Nireremind nila ako kung saan ako dapat umatake, kung saan ako dapat bumasa when it comes to the game. They played a big role to me."

After game, father and son shared a ride home.

"Hiniram niya kotse ko kasi coding siya. Kaya sabay kami uuwi," the younger Zamar said.(JT)
