Fajardo extends record feat with another BPC award

JUNE Mar Fajardo extended the PBA record for the most number of Best Player of the Conference award won after being honored with the title Wednesday night just before Game 4 of the Philippine Cup finals.

The 6-foot-10 San Miguel main man was a runaway choice for his 10th PBA-NUSTAR RESORT CEBU Best Player of the Conference award after garnering a total of 1,100 points by finishing tied with Robert Bolick of NLEX in the statistical department with 472 points.

But Fajardo garnered enough cushion in the media votes with 514 and players' votes with 114, to clinch the win.

The 10 BPC awards are the most by any player in the 48-year history of the league, including eight in the all-Filipino Conference.

He shared the plum with his entire San Miguel Beer team at center court of the Smart Araneta Coliseum during the short awarding ceremony, while being joined by Commissioner Willie Marcial, San Miguel governor Robert Non, and Meralco counterpart Atty. Bill Pamintuan.

Top rookie pick Stephen Holt was a surprise runner-up behind Fajardo with 651 points built behind 448 points in statistics, and then placed second in the media votes with 196, but received the least votes among players with only six.

Bolick, the consistent leader from the eliminations all the way to the playoffs, finished at third with 641 points. While he ended up with the same statistical points with Fajardo, he only finished third in both the media votes (136) and players' votes (33).

NLEX falling short of a semifinals stint obviously hurt Bolick's chances of bagging a first ever BPC title.

San Miguel's CJ Perez and Christian Standhardinger of Barangay Ginebra brought up the rear at fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Perez totaled 503 points with 429 in statistics, and finished second in players' votes with 36, but only had 38 in media votes.
