'Fortune Cookie' goes back to PBA roots

THE legends are coming over.

Fortunato 'Atoy' Co watched at ringside of the Mall of Asia Arena as special guest during the PBA Philippine Cup doubleheader on Saturday.

The 1979 MVP and among the top gunners of the fabled Crispa Redmanizers was with his wife Monette Co as they enjoyed the view at courtside during the main game between Phoenix Fuel Masters and Converge FiberXers.

Nicknamed 'Fortune Cookie,' Co was the second straight PBA great to visit and watch the games live after fellow pioneer and Hall of Famer Manny Paner dropped by Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

The 70-year-old product of Mapua was a member of all the 13 championships won by the Redmanizers, including two grandslams in 1976 and 1983.

He's a nine-time Mythical First Team and the first player in PBA history to reach the 5,000-point and 10,000-point plateau, respectively.

Co was considered one of the greatest shooters in league history, who was later named part of the 25 Greatest Players and inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2005.

The 6-foot-2 gunner, best remembered for his fadeaway jumper, also went into coaching and won a pair of championship with Crispa in the defunct Philippine Basketball League (PBL).

A former actor and public servant, Co's last involvement in basketball came with the Mapua Cardinals as coach of his alma mater from 2012 to 2018. (RG)
