Gary David: Among best gunners PBA has ever seen

AS he turned 42 on Monday, a Facebook friend greeted Gary David "Happy Birthday to the crownless king."

King with no crown?

Without winning a championship in his PBA career, David did reign as king as he was scoring champ for four consecutive years from 2010.

Among the best pure shooters seen in league history, David was one of only 20 players to top the scoring race.

And he was one of only 11 to be scoring champ more than once, the others being Bogs Adornado, Danny Florencio, Ramon Fernandez, Ricky Brown, Allan Caidic, Alvin Patrimonio, Eric Menk, Asi Taulava, Mark Caguioa and Terrence Romeo.

David first topped everybody in scoring in 2009-10 with an average of 18.2 points per game. He repeated the feat in 2010-11 (21.8 ppg), again in 2011-12 (25.8) and again in 2012-13 (18.8).

His 25.8-point clip in 2011-12 is in the Top 10 in all-time most, next to Florencio's 32.3 in 1977, Adornado's 27.0 in 1975, 27.4 in 1982 and 26.2 in 1981, Fernandez's 27.8 in 1984, Brown's 27.9 in 1985, and Caidic's 27.4 in 1989, 26.6 in 1990 and 27.1 in 1991.

Through his last season, David is No. 18 in the league's list of all-time best scoring averages with his career norm of 15.9.

Ahead of David are Brown (23.1), Adornado (20.4), Terrence Romeo (19.75), Estoy Estrada (19.65), Caidic (19.6), Benjie Paras (17.691), Fernandez (17.687), Patrimonio (17.6), Jun Papa (17.5), June Mar Fajardo (17.4), Atoy Co (17.3), Florencio (16.9), Francis Arnaiz (16.8), Paul Alvarez (16.6), Jun Limpot (16.2), Samboy Lim (16.03) and Vergel Meneses (16.02).

But for all his scoring prowess, David failed to be part of a champion team through 13 years of PBA career he started as Coca-Cola's 10th pick in the 2004 draft. (SB)
