Gilas enters final phase of training camp for Asian Games

GILAS Pilipinas is now at the Inspire Sports Academy for the final and crucial phase of its preparation for the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Coach Tim Cone and the rest of the national team entered training camp inside the National University in Laguna Saturday morning and went at work right away in the afternoon.

Cone earlier mentioned Gilas could be holding twice-a-day, closed-door practice in order to fast track absorbing the system in place with only a week left before the curtains rise for the 19th edition of the Asiad in China.

"We're gonna be foundational, we're gonna be fundamental and get to whatever level we can get to by doing it the right way," said Cone prior to entering training camp.

At Inspire Academy, Gilas gets to play Meralco in a tune up game. And upon its departure on Thursday, it takes on the visiting Changwon LG Sakers the following day at the Philsports Arena in a friendly that will be open to the public.

The two tune up games are enough for the national team, according to Cone, given it only had a limited, two-week timetable to prepare for the Asiad.

"We really don't have pretty much time to play a lot of friendly games. To me the practices are more important than the friendlies because we learn more in practices," Cone said.

Gilas Pilipinas will leave for Hangzhou on Sept. 23 (Saturday) and plays its first game against Bahrain on Tuesday (Sept. 26).(RG)
