Jackson Corpuz warns opponents: Never take Columbian Dyip lightly

Never take the Columbian Dyip lightly.

Jackson Corpuz delivered the message following the Dyip's 124-118 stunner over reigning and four-time Philippine Cup champions San Miguel Beermen in their season debut last Friday.

"Huwag silang magre-relax sa'min kasi meron silang mapupuntahan kapag ganun," warned Corpuz.

Rookie CJ Perez performed as good as advertised, finishing with a team-high 26 points. But Corpuz was equally impressive with his hustle, defense and strong rebounding on both ends. He eventually finished with 21 points and cornered 11 rebounds.

"Ang iniisip ko na lang patapos na 'yung oras. Kapag binigay sa'kin 'yung bola, iniisip ko lagi mas-shoot ko," said Corpuz, who made 9-of-16 from the field.

But his defense stood out the most. Corpuz held his own against June Mar Fajardo, underscoring his effort with three blocks 6-foot-10, five-time most valuable player.

Friday's win marked the very first time Columbian defeated San Miguel in the Philippine Cup.

Corpuz said trust and confidence with each other enabled them to do the impossible.

"May tiwala na. Kasi nung nakaraan, alam naman nating lahat na puro kanya-kanya. Nagtiwala kami sa sarili namin, nagtiwala kami sa kakampi namin, nagtiwala kami sa sistema at sa mga coaching staff," said Corpuz. (JB)
