Magnolia, Rain or Shine downplay unbeaten run in PBA On Tour

RAIN or Shine and Magnolia remain as the two teams undefeated in the PBA On Tour, but gave little emphasis on their perfect record so far.

Coaches Yeng Guiao and Chito Victolero both agreed their early success in the pre-season doesn't really reflect the true state of what is to come in Season 48 of the league.

"It's always nice to win of course, pero at the same time, we don't want to fall into false sense of confidence," admitted Guiao. "Akala mo magaling ka na, e hindi pa naman totohanan ito. So mahaba pa yan, malayo pa."

Victolero shares the same line of thinking.

"Hindi ito yung gauge naman. Hindi ito yung kung ano ang tatakbuhin namin ngayon, hindi basehan ito para yun din ang tatakbuhin namin for the regular season," said the Magnolia mentor.

On Sunday, Magnolia and Rain or Shine extended their winning streak in the pre-season.

The Elasto Painters whipped Terrafirma Dyip, 121-95, to hike its record at 4-0, which the Hotshots equaled later on behind a 91-80 victory over rival Barangay Ginebra.

According to Victolero, the pre-season serves as the perfect time for all teams to improve and get better heading into the new season.

"We want to build, and magkaroon kami ng progression dun sa mga ginagawa namin at magkaroon ng improvement," said the Magnolia coach. "I-build yung confidence ng mga player, yung chemistry nila. Yan yung mga gusto naming ma-practice."

It's the same thing Guiao has been doing with the Elasto Painters.

"Ang importante yung nakakapag-laro kami, to gain experience, to learn, to validate ourselves, gain more confidence, and be able to run our system," Guiao stressed.

But to be fair to their respective teams, both coaches appreciate the hard work their players have been doing that resulted into their unbeaten run three weeks since the series of exhibition matches started.

"If you're looking for a good sign, this is a good sign," said Guiao. "There's also something positive we can take home from this pre-season." (RG)
