No celebration for Von Pessumal's big night

Von Pessumal accomplished a milestone on Saturday by going 8-for-8 from three-point range en route to a career-high 24 points.

But there was no celebration. What was supposed to be a big night for the SMB shooting guard went done as a footnote, as the Beermen absorbed another heartbreak following its 110-97 loss to the TNT KaTropa at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

"I hate to repeat myself but I'd rather get the win and score zero," said the third-year sharpshooter out of Ateneo, who has eclipsed the 6-for-6 record held by eight players, most recently Mike Tolomia back in 2017.

Nevertheless, Pessumal's effort will be etched into the record books as the all-time mark for most triples without a miss.

But as tough as the loss had been, Pessumal said that he is still proud with the way the team fought.

"I'm proud of my team, my teammates, because we were down big but didn't give up until the very last possession. For me yun yung pinaka-important na nakuha sa game na 'to kasi I always try to look at the positives of a game," Pessumal said.

Against TNT, SMB fell behind by 20 in the early goings. The deficit went as high as 24 but the Beermen gave the KaTropa some scare when Marcio Lassiter hit a baseline runner to pull SMB within 97-105 with still 2:34 left.

It turned out to be their last gallant stand though.

In the ensuing play, Tony Semerad nailed a corner trey and Terrence Jones scored on a slam to seal the win.

"I think if we played that way, the way we played in the last part of the fourth quarter, I think it's gonna be hard for teams to beat us. But we have to play consistently like that," Pessumal said. "I trust the coaches and my teammates." (JB)
