PBA awaits government nod on Season 46 start

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said they've diligently done their assignments, making him confident the government would consider their proposal for Season 46 start this month.

Marcial specifically requested a mid-July opener of the long-delayed season in his presentation before the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases Technical Working Group (TWG) composed of various government agencies Wednesday.

The online meeting, presided over by Usec. Dodo Dulay of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), lasted less than an hour.

And it's now up to TWG to make its recommendations for the approval of the IATF.

"Sana mapagbigyan tayo," said Marcial of the league's wish to reopen and do their part of providing sports entertainment to the nation still gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The PBA ball clubs have been holding practices for two months now under closed-circuit concept and enjoy relative success in observing health protocols as they did during their bubble tourney in Clark last year.

The PBA cited the Ynares Arena in Pasig as their eyed playing venue.

In his presentation, Marcial mentioned the NBA and the Chinese league playing before a full-capacity crowd and the Japanese and the Korean league with 20-percent capacity.

"Tayo, crowd is not allowed, and with only minimum personnel inside the venue," said Marcial.

If allowed to launch, the PBA would continue to be guided by strict health protocols. This even as about 95 percent of PBA players, coaches and staff have been vaccinated. (SB)
