Playing in the PBA, a life-long dream for this unheralded navy personnel

IT'S never too late for Dhon Reverente to chase his PBA dream.

An enlisted navy personnel, the 31-year-old Reverente is not giving up his hopes of finally playing in the big league. For this certified fitness trainer, it's going to be now or never.

"Gusto ko lang subukan hanggang saan ang kakayahan ko sa paglalaro," said the 6-foot-2 Reverente in an exclusive interview with PBA.ph.

"Ayaw ko lang pagdating ng araw magkaroon ako ng tanong sa sarili ko 'what if sinubukan ko'?"

Before applying for the PBA Rookie Draft, Reverente weighed his options on whether to pursue his dream of playing in the PBA or just stay on as enlisted navy personnel. He believes he needs to give up one of them.

In the end, he decided to chase his lifelong dream.

"Yun nga problema ko, once makaakyat na ako sa pro, hindi na ako magagamit ng Navy sa AFP Olympics or kung ano mang sasalihan nilang events sa basketball," added Reverente. "Pero mas matimbang ang pangarap. Once in a lifetime opportunity lang yan."

Reverente was supposed to join the PBA Draft two years ago, but didn't meet the required number of games for aspirants who wish to turn pro.

"Kinulang ako ng laro sa D-League," said Reverente, who played for the Marinerong Pilipino Skippers.

Reverente, who also played for the Philippine Merchant Maritime School, burst into the basketball scene when he became a star player of the Muntinlupa Cagers - a team owned by former PBA chairman Lito Alvarez, in the MPBL. He also saw action for the Pasay Voyagers.

Reverente knows his chances of getting drafted is a long shot considering the March 14 event is a talent rich class.

All he wanted is to be given the opportunity and see where he goes. He's got nothing to lose anyway. After all, he's a certified trainer and can go back to his profession if things do not work out according to plan. (RJ)
