Playoff-bonus-chasing Road Warriors face big road block in Beermen

NLEX returns from a weeklong respite Sunday, hoping to be in best possible condition in a vital game versus unbeaten tournament pacesetter San Miguel Beer at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

The Road Warriors were in poor form as they suffered a 112-74 blowout at the hands of the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters on April 20 at the Caloocan Sports Center. Before this rout, coach Frankie Lim's chargers went down to a 104-101 loss to the TNT Tropang Giga in Candon, Ilocos Sur.

But with their strong conference start, the Road Warriors remain among the PBA Philippine Cup elimination-round front-runners with a 5-3 win-loss card.

Robert Bolick and his teammates, however, must check their slump now if they're to stay in the fight for the Top 2 and the twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.

A big, big roadblock for NLEX is the San Miguel squad which has been on a perfect romp from its Commissioner's Cup title clincher.

Though sealing a claim at one of the Top 2 spots with a week to go in the elims play, the Beermen aren't expected to go slow as they intend to keep their momentum going to the playoffs.

Coach Jorge Gallent and his Beermen, at 8-0, are three games away from a sweep. They go for it versus NLEX, Blackwater and Meralco.

The Road Warriors, meanwhile, have the Beermen, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and the Barangay Ginebra Kings as final elims assignments.

All these matches are must-win for the Road Warriors as they're locked in a tight race for second spot with the Kings (6-3), the Magnolia Hotshots (5-3) and even the fifth-running TNT Tropang Giga (5-4).(SB(
