Williams achieves 5,000-PBA career rebounds

QUIETLY, Kelly Williams achieved yet another milestone in his PBA career during Game 1 of the PBA Governors Cup finals between TNT and Barangay Ginebra.

The former MVP grabbed his 5,000 career rebound during the 104-88 win by the Tropang Giga against the Kings.

He achieved the record early in the first quarter and went on to finish with four boards for a 5,003 total.

Williams, 42, became the 13th player to achieve the feat in the league's 49-year history, but only the second active player after San Miguel Beer's June Mar Fajardo, according to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.

During the same conference, Fajardo climbed in the league's all-time total rebounds at no. 7 after grabbing 21 rebounds in a 113-112 San Miguel win over Rain or Shine during the group stage, and surpassed 1981 MVP Philip Cezar (5,834).

Four-time MVP Ramon Fernandez still holds the most number of boards in the history of Asia's oldest professional league with 8,652 over 20 seasons.

Meanwhile, Williams is currently chasing a ninth championship with TNT, which has been home to him for more than a decade now.

He played solid back up in the middle for Poy Erram and import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson in the Tropang Giga's 104-88 win over the Kings in the opener of the best-of-seven title series.

He was good to play for 13 minutes and shot 1-of-2 from the field aside from trying to slow down the Ginebra frontcourt duo of Justine Brownlee and Japeth Aguilar. (RG)
