Williams caps memorable debut conference with PBA Finals MVP plum

MIKEY Williams achieved another personal milestone in winning his first ever PBA championship.

The prolific 30-year-old guard became the first rookie in a long while to be named Honda-PBA Press Corps finals MVP after steering the TnT Tropang Giga to the Philippine Cup title Friday night behind a 94-79 rout of the Magnolia Hotshots at the Don Honorio Ventura State University gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.

Williams left no doubt as to who was the best player in the best-of-seven title series, averaging 27.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in the five-game finals.

He became the first rookie to be named finals MVP after Brandon Cablay in 2003 and only the third freshman to pull off the feat first achieved by Danny Seigle in 1999.

Williams credited his teammates and the TnT coaching staff for helping him attain success early in his PBA career.

"They (Tropang Giga) definitely made my job a lot easier. They just gave me the confidence and continue to push me," he said. "But I have to thank everybody behind me, the 15 (players) and the coaches."

The award came just a game after the 6-foot-2 Williams lost to Magnolia's Calvin Abueva in the Best Player of the Conference award.

But for the entire finals, Williams was just head and shoulder above the rest.

He torched Magnolia for a finals record of 10 three pointers in a 106-98 loss in Game 3 where he finished with a game-high of 39 points.

In the series clincher, Williams had 24 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
