Abueva golden player to reach 1,000 rebound milestone

CALVIN Abueva quietly reached another career milestone two weeks ago.

The Magnolia veteran became the latest player to grab 1,000 offensive rebounds in PBA history during the Hotshots' Commissioner's Cup game against Barangay Ginebra last Oct. 23.

Abueva, 34, had six of his nine total rebounds offensively in the team's 103-97 loss to the Kings in accomplishing the job.

The 'Beast' was the 50th player to achieve the feat first realized by legendary center Manny Paner in June 11, 1981.

He was also the first to attain the landmark in five years or since TNT big man Kelly Williams did it in June 25, 2017.

Commissioner Willie Marcial honored Abueva for the feat by handing him a specially-crafted PBA plaque at halftime of the Magnolia-Blackwater match Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Joining Marcial during the short awarding ceremony at midcourt were Magnolia governor Rene Pardo and counterparts Robert Non of San Miguel and Converge's Chito Salud, as well as Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy.

Abueva added an offensive rebound in the Hotshots' 91-69 blowout of Blackwater, bringing his total to 1,001. (RG)
