Black thrilled to have Pasaol in Meralco Bolts team

MERALCO coach Norman Black expects to harness the scoring prowess of their first-round pick Alvin Pasaol.

Black said he was pleasantly surprised that Pasaol, who once erupted for 49 points during his stint with University of the East in the UAAP, was still up for grabs when the Bolts selected the ninth pick in the talent-rich PBA Rookie Draft.

"We are quite happy to welcome Alvin Pasaol into the Meralco Bolts team. We were hoping he might drop to us (at No. 9) and it happened," said the multi-titled coach.

With Pasaol, Black looks to add firepower to a defensive-oriented team that could use his attacking skills.

"We have been a very solid basketball team on the defensive end of the court the past few years. Our hope is that Alvin can be a force on the offensive side of the ball and he will give us someone who can create his own shot," Black said.

The 6-foot-2 Pasaol cherished the chance to further develop under Black, both offensively and defensively.

"Excited na akong matuto kay Coach Norman Black," said the burly winger, who's also thrilled to be teammates with Aaron Black, the Outstanding Rookie of the last Philippine Cup bubble, and Chris Newsome, in his pro debut.

"Naniniwala ako ito ang taon natin, let's get that championship," Pasaol said in his message to Meralco fans.

The Bolts have two other picks in John Yusa (third round) and Luis Brill (fourth round).

"Yasa and Brill will be invited to practice and we will see how they fit in and perform," said Black. (OL)
