Cardona embraces opportunity to be back in PBA

HOME is where the heart is for veteran Mac Cardona.

The 40-year-old guard is just happy being back in the PBA to play for the Zamboanga Valientes in the inaugural 3x3 tournament that kicks off next week.

Cardona already knows the rigors of the three-a-side event, having already played with the San Juan Knights before.

But this one is definitely special for him since it meant coming back to his roots where his pro career started as a first round pick of Air21 during the 2005 draft.

At 40, Cardona is one of the oldest players in the tournament, giving him more than enough experience to share with the rest of the Valientes, who are also composed of JR Cawaling, Kyle Neypes, and Gino Jumao-as.

"Bibigyan ko sila ng mga magandang na-experience ko sa PBA," said the former De La Salle stalwart, who was a one-time PBA Best Player of the Conference (2007 Fiesta Conference) and Finals MVP of the 2008-09 Philippine Cup.

Cardona knows retirement is nearing for him, and hopes he'll be able to get one last tab at making it back to Asia's pioneering pro league should he gets to turn back the hands of time with Zamboanga.

"I'm kind of old now. I'm 40 years old. Tignan natin kung mabigyan pa ako rito ng opportunity," he said.

"So sana, maging maganda yung pagka-retiro ko sa PBA." (RG)
