Northport on the lookout for a new import

NORTHPORT is scrambling to find a replacement import at short notice to take over the injured Venky Jois as it tries to fight for a playoff spot in the PBA Governors' Cup.

Coach Bonnie Tan said the Batang Pier need to fill in the hole left by Venky with two important games coming their way that would have a big say on their quarterfinal hopes.

Venky is totally out of the conference after going down with what the team suspected as an Achilles injury during Northport's game against Meralco on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old Aussie hurt his right foot after he tried shooting over Meralco counterpart Allen Durham.

Venky said he couldn't feel anything on his right leg and had to be taken out of the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on a stretcher. He exited at the 3:15 mark of the first period and finished with four points and two rebounds.

Without an import, the Batang Pier fell against the Bolts, 114-104, for a 3-5 record and fifth place in Group A.

But Tan said things aren't over yet for the embattled franchise with Magnolia and TNT still up on the Batang Pier's final schedule.

Their concern first and foremost right now though, is to have the team's next import. (RG)
