Oftana beats PBA Draft deadline

CALVIN Oftana, the reigning NCAA MVP from San Beda, beefed up what is already a loaded PBA Draft pool by submitting his application on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old forward from Dumaguete is the latest aspirant to join the list for the March 14 event where is considered to be among the potential first round picks.

Oftana is a member of the Gilas Pilipinas team that clobbered Thailand, 93-69, in the second window of the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers.

Oftana was the third Gilas aspirant to submit an application this week as fellow Gilas teammates William Navarro and Jaydee Tungcab also formally applied Monday.

Meanwhile, Jerrick Ahanmisi, younger brother of Alaska guard Maverick, also jumped into the PBA bandwagon on Tuesday.

Navarro, who was raised in Athens, has carved a reputation as one of the smartest big men in college today, proving invaluable for Ateneo in the Eagles' perfect 16-0 season in UAAP Season 82.

On the other hand, the 24-year-old Tungcab is one of the peskiest guards out there, as evidenced by his run for University of the Philippines.

He, however, only saw minimal minutes in his final season with the Fighting Maroons, tallying 1.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.3 minutes last UAAP Season 82.

Oftana was no stranger to collegiate basketball observers.

This Dumaguete lad led San Beda to an 18-0 sweep in the eliminations of NCAA Season 95 enroute to an outright Finals berth.

Oftana was also solid as part of the Cignal HD-San Beda Hawkeyes that won the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants' Cup.

A total of 90 aspirants have signified their intention to join the PBA Draft as of Tuesday. Deadline for submission of application is Wednesday, Jan. 27 (RL)
