Shaun Ildefonso faces father's team in PBA debut

FOR the Ildefonsos, it's going to be a family affair right in the opener of PBA Season 47.

As Converge makes its league debut Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, so does Rain or Shine rookie Shaun Ildefonso as the two teams clash in the curtain raiser of the Philippine Cup opening doubleheader.

The 4 p.m. game marks the first time the young ildefonso will go up opposite his legendary father Danny Ildefonso, who is deputy coach of the FiberXers.

And days leading to the meeting, the taunting has begun between father and son.

"Actually, pag nasa bahay ako, minsan sinasabi ko sa kanya 1-0, 1-0," related the young Ildefonso during the PBA Media Day at Novotel Hotel.

The 45-year-old Ildefonso, a two-time MVP and eight-time champion, would reply in a manner his son wouldn't understand.

"Ilokano e. (Kaya) hindi ko maintindihan," said Shaun, picked no. 10 overall by the Elasto Painters in the last draft.

But whether he faces his father's team or not in his pro debut, the Rain or Shine rookie looks forward to finally fulfilling his boyhood dream.

"It's really a lifelong dream of mine to play in the PBA," he said. "And coincidence siya (Danny I) yung makakalaban namin on opening day."

Incidentally, Shaun played under his father at National University where the elder Ildefonso serves as assistant coach to Jeff Napa. (RG)
