Slaughter disagrees with Cone, says Ginebra can still get better

Greg Slaughter believes Barangay Ginebra San Miguel can still get better despite coach Tim Cone's proclamation that the team had produced its best game in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

Slaughter scored 10 of his 12 points in the third that saw Ginebra take control of Magnolia in their latest Manila Clasico encounter on the way to a 104-84 win in front of more than 10,000 fans at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Ginebra won back-to-back games to climb into ninth place at 3-5, half-a-game behind Magnolia and Columbian Dyip which share identical 4-5 records.

"I don't think we're playing at our best right now yet," said Slaughter. "We got the win but I think there's still a lot more room, another level that we can get to. Not just another level, but I think there's still a few more levels we can get to. Hopefully we just keep going and ride this momentum."

Cone, however, was in a mood to be totally satisfied with Ginebra's performance after starting the conference with a 1-5 record.

"We played our best game of the conference," Cone said. "But we gotta play our best game of the conference next game too, and the one after that, and the one after that."

Ginebra plays Columbian on Wednesday in a crucial match that will put the winner inside the top eight before meeting Alaska on Sunday. They will finish the eliminations on July 6 against GlobalPort.

Slaughter took advantage of his height by dominating the undermanned Magnolia frontline inside, allowing Ginebra to pull away after a seesaw battle for three-and-a-half quarters.

"Couldn't really get my way in the first half but we just gotta stick with it. It's a 48-minute game and I was able to find my way, get some easy baskets in there, and start our run," he said.(JT)
