WPBA 3x3 Invitational gets going

A new chapter in Philippine women's basketball history unfolds Monday as the WPBA Invitational 3x3 is set for a relaunch at the Ayala Malls Makati Circuit.

Six teams will answer the bell in the opening phase of the tournament which the 48-year-old league last held yet in 2016.

Two Gilas Pilipinas women's team comprised the field along with Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy-Go For-Gold, Angelis Resort, and Uratex Dream.

Uratex, featuring former National University stalwart Kaye Pingol, battles Angelis Resort led by veteran Allana Lim, in the opening match of a four-game bill starting at 3:35 p.m.

Joining Pingol at Uratex are Samantha Harada, Angelica Anies, Eunique Chan, April Siat, and Cecilia Junsay, while aside from Lim also comprising Angelis Resort are Jenina Ann Solis, Francince Geli, Mary Joy Galicia, Fiona Gonalo, and Alyssa Villamor.

Gilas Pilipinas-A meanwhile will be bannered by UAAP MVP Kacey dela Rosa along with Hazelle Yam, Kristine Cayabyab, Katrina Guytingco, and Mikka Cacho, and Gilas-B features Jhazmin Joson, April Tano, Luisa San Juan, and April Penaranda.

Afril Bernardino leads Philippine Navy-Go For Gold along with Andrea Tongco, Trixie Antiquiera, Janille De Castro, Janelle Mendoza, and Josephine Ong, while the Philippine Air Force roster is comprised of Daphnie Tecson, Analyn Almazan, Abigail Manzanares, Kristine Abriam, Fria Bernado, and Cindy Resultay.

Lim, Geli, Almazan, and Bernardo are among those who saw action in the inaugural WPBA 3x3 seven years ago, playing for Blackwater, Meralco, and NLEX, respectively.

Gilas-A and Gilas-B face each other in an early clash of favorites in the second game set at 3:55 p.m. followed by the Air Force-Uratex showdown (4:15 p.m.), and Gilas-A vs Angelis Resort tussle (4:35 p.m.).

Gilas-B and Phillippine Navy-Go For Gold go up against each other on Tuesday also at the same venue at 1:30 p.m.

Games will be played during playdates of the PBA men's 3x3 Third Conference.

The top four teams by the end of the 15-game eliminations spread through three legs will advance in the knockout stage set next month at the Ayala Malls Glorietta. (RG)
